He said:

Yes, if you give me the presidency, why not, I will take. I am capable of doing the job.

“The problem is who is capable of doing the job. For now, I am focusing on my constituency; there is a lot of job to be done.

“If you give me opportunity, I will like to go back to the Senate for a second term, but if the people of Nigeria want me to be president, they will show the hand. I can do the job. I can build a 21st century economy for our people.”

Breaking: Court stops Obaseki from participating in PDP primaries

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has restrained the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki from participating in the governorship primary election organised by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

Governor Godwin Obaseki has been stopped by a Federal High Court from participating in the governorship primary of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The primary election is scheduled for 25 June.

The ban order was given 22 June by Justice E.A. Obile of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt.

It was based on a motion ex parte filed by a PDP member, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama.

Joined in the suit are Prince Uche Secondus, the PDP, Independent National Electoral Commission, chairman of the party screening committee, Kingsley Chinda and other members of the committee.

Obaseki, an APC renegade, was named as the eighth defendant in the case.

The applicant is seeking a court order to restrain Secondus and the party from allowing Obaseki to buy the forms for the primary, other than those who bought the forms within the timetable initially published for the election.

Justice Obile granted the interim injunction as requested.

The PDP, mindful of the legal minefield announced a waiver for Obaseki, to enable him to participate in the primary election, even though he joined the party only on Friday 19 June last week.

The party also reconvened the Chinda screening committee which had ended its assignment on 5 June

The committee specially screened Obaseki on Saturday 20 June.

All the parties in the case were to be served via substituted means.

Substantive hearing in the case has been adjourned till Wednesday 24 June.

You’ve failed us – Northern elders tell president buhari while lamenting the high rate of insecurity in the north

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has lamented over the high rate of insecurity in the north, accusing President Muhammadu Buhari of failing to tackle the situation. In a statement released on Sunday, Ango Abdullahi, convener of the forum, said the issue of insecurity in the north is getting worse by the day.

He added that the constant attacks by bandits and Boko Haram insurgents are indications that the Buhari administration “has failed woefully” in keeping citizens safe.

See the statement below:
“Northern Elders Forum (NEF) is alarmed at the rising insecurity of communities and their properties in the North. Recent escalation of attacks by bandits, rustlers and insurgents leave the only conclusion that the people of the North are now completely at the mercy of armed gangs who roam towns and villages at will, wreaking havoc.

“It would appear that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and governors have lost control over the imperatives of protecting people of the North, a constitutional duty that they swore to uphold.

“The situation is getting worse literally by the day as bandits and insurgents appear to sense a huge vacuum in political will and capacity which they exploit with disastrous consequences on communities and individuals.”

Abdullahi said the north has never experienced this level of insecurity, accusing Buhari of issuing threats and promises that have no effect.

“As a responsible body, the forum has joined millions of others in prayers and in giving advice and encouragement to all authorities that have responsibility to protect our communities,” he said.

“It is now time to say, enough is enough. Our people are known for their patience and respect for constituted authorities, but all governments must be aware by now that all Northerners have been pushed to the wall.

“The forum is aware that some citizens are contemplating peaceful protests, which are their constitutional rights, to draw attention of President Buhari and all levels of authority to the plight of people of the North.

“The forum urges all citizens to conduct themselves in peaceful and responsible manner, and it urges governments to respect the rights of citizens to express their opinions peacefully.”

Abdulahi added that the NEF is consulting with other groups and organisations that share its goals in order to come up with demands from the government over the “unremitting assault” on the lives and livelihood of northerners.

The statement adds: “The Forum reminds President Muhammadu Buhari that provision of security and pursuit of economic welfare of citizens are the only two constitutional responsibilities of the state which all leaders must achieve.

“Our current circumstances in the North clearly demonstrate that President Buhari’s administration has woefully failed to achieve either. This is unacceptable.

“We demand an immediate and comprehensive improvement of our security in the North. We are tired of excuses and verbal threats which criminals laugh at, and our fellow citizens see as a clear failure of leadership which they see as part of them. Enough is enough.”

President Buhari , probes Late Abba Kyari’s office, cancels appointments

A report by The Guardian indicates that President Muhammadu Buhari has commenced a probe into the office of the late Chief of Staff Abba Kyari.

According to the report, the investigation may lead to all appointments and approvals made by Kyari without Buhari’s permission being cancelled.

Also, a source within the Presidential Villa quoted in the report, suggested that the new move is as a result of the power block that produced the new chief of staff Ibrahim Gambari fighting back.

Professor Gambari was recently appointed as replacement to Late Abba Kyari by President Buhari.

Though no reason was given for the president’s action, reports suggested no less than 150 memos that didn’t have his authorisation may have been uncovered.

Sources told The Guardian that the directive might just be a continuation of the bickering that produced a deep crack within the ranks of the president’s men last February.

The first sign that all was not okay within Buhari’s inner cabinet emerged in December 2019 when National Security Adviser Babagana Monguno wrote a memo to the president alleging interference by Kyari.

He accused the late Kyari of usurping presidential powers and directed service chiefs to ignore instructions by the latter.

The NSA also accused the chief of staff of sidestepping the president’s directive, to impose his own decision for implementation.

Perhaps the most potent of allegations raised against the chief of staff by the NSA at the time was that he had been flagrantly discarding decisions already taken by the president and imposing his own recommendation(s).

President Buhari goes tough, restricts powers of ministers When the president was re-elected in 2019, he issued a directive to all his appointees to clear files and memos through Kyari on any matter that required presidential attention.

Monguno’s argument in his memo was that the chief of staff did not swear to a constitutional oath and should, therefore, not be seen issuing directives that carry serious implications for the nation.

Meanwhile, there is an indication that President Buhari may have directed his new chief of staff, Professor Gambari to cancel all appointments and approvals made by the late Chief of staff Abba Kyari without his permission.

Kyari died of coronavirus in a Lagos hospital on Friday, April 17 after testing positive to the viral disease. Kyari who is from Borno state was regarded as the most influential personality in the presidency before his death.
